Hōten Ryū
Hōten Ryū (also written as "Houten Ryuu") is a unique weapons-based martial art founded centuries ago in Japan. The art's primary emphasis is on swordsmanship (battōjutsu); however, many other weapons are used in the art (some of which are found in no other arts).
Another distinctive aspect of the art is its emphasis on training outdoors. Historically, the art developed in the rugged mountains of Japan and was passed down by monks and priests. Even nowadays, training in Japan is regularly conducted at a small shrine in all weather conditions. As the 14th head master once said, "...everybody only does lessons in training halls (dojo), so that leads to very strict formats of learning. Hōten-Ryu’s training is more focused on 'always being in mountains and fields,' so we train ourselves with real life environments." In Arizona, we follow this emphasis of training outdoors.
Hōten Ryū is not commonly known and only a handful of people are aware of its existence even in its home country. While living in Kyoto, Japan, I was lucky enough to study the art. I knew right away that it was something special and it will forever be a part of my life.
For the first time ever, the relatively unknown system of Hōten Ryū is being taught outside of Japan. It is with great honor, my teacher has allowed me to represent the art in America. Now that I have returned stateside, I am providing semiprivate instruction in the Tempe area.
The Enten Dojo is not a martial arts business, so we require no contracts and there are no tournaments. We are a small group of martial arts enthusiasts dedicated to the study of Hōten Ryū. If you are looking for an alternative to commercialized programs, consider training with us.
Instructor certification provided upon request. Prospective students may inquire into instruction here.
